Here are some basic maintenance programs that you can run that will help your computer more smoothly. You can print out these directions for future reference.

Select the type of machine you use:
PC (Dell, HP, IBM, etc)    or    Apple/Mac (iBook, Powerbook, etc)

PC Instructions

Virus & Spyware Scan
  • This varies upon the program you are using. Normally the Virus Scan icon will appear in the bottom right corner of your screen, near the time. Even though your anti-virus may run automatic scans, you should still run a manual scan. Find your Anti-Virus icon, double click on it, and do a full virus scan of your computer. If you don't have virus protection, you should. Here is a link to a FREE program that we like: AVG Free
Windows Update
  1. Click on the Start menu
  2. Click All Programs
  3. Click on Windows Update
  4. Run the Wizard and install at least all "High Priority" updates
  5. Reboot as neccessary, and repeat until there are no more High Priority Updates
Disk Cleanup
  1. 2x click on My Computer
  2. Right click on the "C" drive
  3. Select properties
  4. Click the "Disk Cleanup" button
  5. It will search your computer, then check all boxes and click delete.
Error Checking/Scan Disk
  1. 2x click on My Computer
  2. Right click on the "C" drive
  3. Select properties
  4. Next, click on the "Tools" tab
  5. Click "Check Now" by Error Checking.
  6. Check both boxes
  7. Click start
  8. It will tell you it can't do it now, would you like to do it next time you restart.
    Click yes
  9. Restart. The program will take about 45 minutes to run. When it is finished, it will restart automatically.
Defragmentation
  1. 2x click on My Computer Right click on the "C" drive
  2. Select properties
  3. Next, click on the "Tools" tab
  4. Click "Defragment Now" by Defragmentation
  5. Then Click "Defragment." This too will take about 45 minutes to run.
You should do all of these about once a month.




Mac Instructions

Repair Disk Permissions
  1. Open a new finder window.
  2. Click applications.
  3. Click Utilities.
  4. Click Disk Utility.
  5. Select your hard drive on the left.
  6. Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Updates
  1. Click the Apple Menu in the top left corner.
  2. Click Software Update. It will check automatically and see what updates you need.
  3. Check all boxes.
  4. Click install.
  5. Once it is finished installing, restart your machine.
  6. Repair Disk Permissions (see above).
